New Canadian Guidelines on High Blood Pressure: What You Need to Know — Dr. Helen Dion Explains

Canada’s new 2025 blood pressure guidelines have changed what’s considered healthy. Dr. Helen Dion explains what it means. Book now at Country Hills Medicentres, Mount Royal Medicentres, or in the nearby Panorama Hills community in Calgary.

If you’ve been wondering what counts as “normal” blood pressure or whether your numbers are still within a safe range, you’re not alone. The guidelines have just changed—and they matter more than ever.

Canada has released new national guidelines on how we define and manage high blood pressure (hypertension), and these updates reflect the latest scientific understanding of how to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and more.

Here’s what’s new, in plain language:

What’s Changed?

  • Lower threshold for hypertension: Blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg or higher is now considered elevated, based on accurate, standardized measurements. (Hypertension Canada – 2025 Guidelines PDF)
  • Earlier treatment options: If your blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or above, medication may be started to prevent complications. For those at higher cardiovascular risk (such as individuals with diabetes or heart disease), treatment may begin earlier.
  • New blood pressure goals: The target is now below 130 mmHg systolic, provided that level is safe and well-tolerated for you.
  • Lifestyle continues to be foundational: Heart-healthy habits such as diet changes, physical activity, limiting alcohol, reducing sodium, and managing stress remain critical to long-term success.

These changes mean that some people who were previously told their blood pressure was “okay” may now need to take a closer look.

Why It Matters

High blood pressure is often called a “silent killer” because it doesn’t cause symptoms until it’s already done damage. The good news? It’s one of the most treatable—and preventable—risk factors for serious illness.

As a doctor, I want you to feel informed and empowered. These guidelines aren’t about labeling or overreacting—they’re about prevention, early action, and protecting your long-term health.
